Digital engagement surgery

Supporting communities and collaboration in the voluntary sector

Tuesday 25 September, Kings Place, London

Event outline

This is going to be a really engaging and participatory workshop looking at real-life scenarios on charities using digital techniques to collaborate and communicate.

Nick and Luke will be running a specialist digital engagement surgery; you need to bring your challenges in with you (you will have to submit them in advance) which will be shared in a workshop format to collectively tackle common themes running through the sector.

Nick will begin the session looking specifically at online community engagement within the sector and what can be learned from other people’s experiences. Luke will then share his experience and insight into peer-to-peer successes via KnowHowNonProfit and NCVO.

The focus will be on three spheres of engagement:

  • External engagement; using digital to connect with your stakeholders, supporters and beneficiaries
  • Internal engagement; how can digital impact on internal communications and empower your staff to work better together
  • Peer-to-Peer engagement; what opportunities are there for peer-led knowledge-sharing and collaboration in the sector

What you will get out of the day:

The surgery will give you a chance to focus on key tactics and strategic thinking so that your content, messages, behaviour, and internal alignment all works towards a collaborative goal.

Speaker information:

Nick Torday, Head of Charities, SiftGroups

Nick heads up all the charity and voluntary sector work for SiftGroups, a user-centred digital agency who specialise in community engagement. He works with everyone from British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK through to the National Autistic Society, Parkinson’s UK and NCVO.

Prior to working for Sift Groups, Nick spent seven years running digital teams in the charity sector, for Breast Cancer Care and The Princess Royal Trust for Carers as well as doing consultancy work for a variety of NGOs such as Merlin and Medical Aid for Palestinians. He also spent a period of time living in Ramallah, Palestine working for a Palestinian health organisation.

Nick writes regularly for The Guardian Voluntary Sector Network and also runs the contributory community Because it’s Good (www.becauseitsgood.org) which is for digital experts within the charity sector to share knowledge and expertise.

Luke Chaput de Saintonge, Content Strategy Manager, NCVO

Luke is currently the Content Strategy Manager at NCVO, which means he’s responsible for making sure that all web content and services on the main NCVO website and its various ‘sister’ sites are easy to use, easy to find, easy to maintain and meet NCVO’s business objectives. He moved across to NCVO when it acquired the website KnowHow NonProfit, where he was Head of Content.

Luke has a particular interest in how the web facilitates new forms of learning – from informal peer-to-peer connections on social media spaces, in discussion forums and comment boards, to wikis and e-learning. He lives by the assumption that everyone on the web has an attention span as short as his own …so everything we share needs to be pretty darn interesting!
